Visiting Anchorage
Located on the shores of Cook Inlet
and at the foot of the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is a unique
urban environment set in the heart of a great pristine wilderness.
Anchorage is a place of unexpected
delights, and it's cultural offerings are no exception. Afterall,
this is a city that had a symphony before it had paved roads!
Although we won't comment on the ability of our first symphony
orchestra, it is really quite excellent at present as is our
Museum which specializes in native artifacts and culture.
In any event, our surrrounding
state and national parkland provides plenty of opportunities
to see Alaska wildlife in their natural settings as well as
other non-urban activities more oriented to the outdoors.
Unlike most cities in the lower 48, residents of Anchorage
regularly experience moose walking about their neighborhoods.
A 30 minute drive on either of the
2 highways leaving Anchorage (we only have 2, and one goes North
and one goes South) will put you in real wilderness country. In
fact, within the last several years, we've had residents killed
by grizzly bears within a 1/2 hour drive of downtown Anchorage
while hiking in the mountains. We say that not to scare you, but
to emphasize the unusual location of Anchorage and the natural
resources and wildlife that surround it.
